The language. The tools to write it.

Cheeku turns .chuchu source files into fast native executables through LLVM. Build the compiler from source and add the Chuchu extension to VS Code for editing, navigation and build commands.

RELEASE STATUS

No binary release has been published yet

Release archives are built and tested natively on every platform, and are published only after all four builds pass. Until the first release appears on GitHub Releases, build Cheeku from source — it takes a few commands.

01 · RELEASE ARCHIVES

One archive per platform

Each archive holds the compiler, the MIT licence and the examples. Pick the one that matches your operating system and CPU — an ARM binary is not an x64 one.

AARCH64-APPLE-DARWIN

macOS · Apple Silicon

cheeku-macos-arm64

  • Matching LLVM 23.1 shared libraries and Apple's clang (via xcrun).

X86_64-APPLE-DARWIN

macOS · Intel

cheeku-macos-x64

  • Matching Intel LLVM 23.1 shared libraries and Apple's clang (via xcrun).

X86_64-UNKNOWN-LINUX-GNU

Linux · x86_64

cheeku-linux-x64

  • Matching LLVM 23.1 shared libraries, a compatible glibc and libstdc++, Clang, the GNU linker and libc/libm development files.

X86_64-PC-WINDOWS-MSVC

Windows · x86_64

cheeku-windows-x64

  • LLVM's clang-cl, the x64 Visual Studio C++ Build Tools, the Windows SDK and a compatible MSVC runtime.

02 · BUILD FROM SOURCE

Build Cheeku yourself

You need Rust 1.88 or newer and an LLVM 23.1 installation. Point LLVM_SYS_231_PREFIX at it, then build in release mode. The installation guide covers each operating system in detail.

BUILD AND RUN
git clone https://github.com/chuchu-lang/chuchu-core.git
cd chuchu-core
export LLVM_SYS_231_PREFIX=/path/to/llvm-23.1
cargo build --locked --release
./target/release/cheeku examples/main.chuchu -o hello
./hello

03 · CHUCHU IN YOUR EDITOR

A home in VS Code.

Write, explore and build Chuchu with the Chuchu Language extension. Editing features work on their own. Connect Cheeku when you are ready to compile.

CHUCHU LANGUAGE

Made for .chuchu

Build the extension from its GitHub repository, then install the VSIX in VS Code. Requires VS Code 1.96 or newer.

Already built Cheeku locally? Point chuchu.compilerPath at that executable. A published compiler release is not required.

FROM THE FIRST LINE TO THE NEXT BUILD

  • Write with a little help

Syntax highlighting, snippets, completions, hover documentation and function signatures for your .chuchu files.

  • Follow the names

Jump to definitions, find references and explore the outline. Navigation understands local scope and shadowed variables.

  • Build without leaving the editor

Compile normal or debug programs with your local Cheeku binary, and see compiler errors in the Problems panel.

Lexical and delimiter diagnostics appear as you type. Build with Cheeku for full syntax and type checking. Native debugging uses a separate debugger extension.

04 · GOOD TO KNOW

Before you install

DEPENDENCIES

LLVM is not bundled

Install LLVM and your platform's linker toolchain from their vendors and keep their licences. Use installations that match your architecture.

TARGETS

Host-native output

Cheeku produces executables for the machine it runs on. There is no cross-OS target flag yet.
